About the Role: The Director, People Operations & Global Compliance owns the operational model for Billtrust’s People function and is the accountable leader for HR compliance across all operating countries. This is not a coordination role. The Director drives execution across all HR priorities, ensures the company meets its legal and regulatory obligations in every geography where we operate, and translates People strategy into results. Reporting to the Chief People Officer, this role uses AI tools and agentic workflows to run a lean, high-output People function that delivers outsized impact through disciplined execution and intelligent tooling. This is a player-coach seat with a high personal execution bar. The Director does the work directly, navigates ambiguity with confidence, and creates structure in environments where none exists. Billtrust is actively transforming how the People team operates, building an AI-native function that runs lean, moves fast, and uses automation to do more with less. This role is central to running that operating model and advancing it over time. What You'll Do: Own Operational Execution of People Priorities Lead the translation of People strategy into execution, building workstreams, governance structures, timelines, and stakeholder alignment plans that move critical priorities forward at pace. Manage vendor and system relationships across the HR technology stack, driving day-to-day execution and partnership management on all people systems; surface systems strategy and investment recommendations to the CPO with supporting analysis. Proactively identify and resolve risks, dependencies, and blockers across concurrent initiatives, maintaining operational visibility for People leadership through AI-powered tracking and reporting tools. Other duties as assigned. Drive Operational Excellence Across the People Function Own the People team’s operating rhythms, planning cadences, and accountability mechanisms, ensuring visibility, prioritization, and coordination across all active workstreams. Identify operational friction and directly redesign processes and workflows to improve efficiency, consistency, and execution quality across the People function, using AI-enabled automation wherever possible. Drive adoption and operational integration of AI-enabled tools, automation workflows, and agentic capabilities within the People function, advancing the team’s AI-native operating model as it evolves. Lead change management and implementation for organizational transformation initiatives, new processes, and technology rollouts, driving adoption and follow-through directly. Own Global Compliance & Employment Law Own HR compliance across all Billtrust operating countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Belgium, and India, as well as future geographies as the company expands. Partner with the Chief Legal Officer on statutory requirements, works council obligations, and employment law changes, translating legal guidance into operational policy and practice. Maintain the global employee handbook and all country-specific policies, ensuring currency, accuracy, and legal defensibility across every jurisdiction. Lead compliance audits and remediation efforts, proactively identifying and closing gaps before they become liabilities, and ensuring Billtrust remains audit-ready across all operating countries. What You'll Bring: Required Skills: 7+ years of experience in HR operations, business operations, strategy execution, or a Chief of Staff function, with a demonstrated track record driving complex initiatives across global organizations. Multi-country HR compliance experience across at least 3 jurisdictions, with hands-on knowledge of statutory employment requirements, works council obligations, and country-specific policy management. Experience managing HR system and vendor relationships, with a track record of holding vendors accountable to SLAs, coordinating implementations, and ensuring day-to-day system performance. Proven ability to translate strategy into execution, building governance frameworks and accountability structures in environments where ambiguity is the norm. Strong cross-functional collaboration and influence skills, with a track record of driving alignment across Finance, IT, Legal, and business stakeholders without direct line authority. Track record driving AI adoption across a team or function, including hands-on use of agentic tools, automation workflows, and AI-powered HR systems. Strong executive communication skills, with the ability to produce polished leadership materials, operational dashboards, and progress reporting for senior audiences. Preferred Skills: Experience in a PE-backed or high-growth B2B technology company where pace, accountability, and operational rigor are competitive advantages. Hands-on familiarity with Billtrust’s HR technology ecosystem or comparable platforms (Dayforce, Greenhouse, BetterWorks, or similar), including experience coordinating vendor management and system implementations. Background in HR transformation or organizational effectiveness, with direct experience leading change management efforts tied to new processes, systems, and ways of working. Demonstrated experience with employment law across European jurisdictions, including works council engagement, GDPR-adjacent HR data obligations, or country-level statutory leave and termination requirements. The expected base salary range for this position is $180,000 to $219,000 USD annually.
